Ethers provider not in sync with Ganache provider

I'm using the Ganache provider alongside ethers however after running evm_mine the block number returned by the ethers provider never changes.

		logging: {
			debug: true,
		},
	};
	const provider = Ganache.provider(options);

	await provider.send("miner_stop");

	const rpc = new ethers.BrowserProvider(provider);
	rpc.pollingInterval = 1;

	const start_block = await rpc.getBlockNumber();
	console.log(start_block);

	let count = 1;

	while (count < 5) {
		await provider.send("evm_mine");

		const current_block = await rpc.getBlockNumber();

		console.log(current_block);

		count++;
	}
};

test();

Output:

miner_stop
eth_chainId
eth_blockNumber
10601112
evm_mine
10601112
evm_mine
10601112
evm_mine
10601112
evm_mine
10601112

If I create a new ethers provider for each loop after the evm_mine the correct block number returns.
