Logging needs improving

Currently logging in the app doesn't give a clear indication of what the failure cases are, or even what is happening during the initial handshake phase. Things like "Unknown Client Error" happen frequently with no additional information specifying where in the code a problem was encountered, or what the expected results should have been. When everything is working as expected the logging seems adequate but we need more tracing and debugging code to help elaborate when errors occur.
