auto-pairs isn't working (nixos unstable)

I am using NixOS 25.05 unstable I have a couple of issues I am hoping someone can help me with

I tried adding this

[editor.auto-pairs]
'(' = ')'
'{' = '}'
'[' = ']'
'"' = '"'
'`' = '`'
'<' = '>'

But that generates an invalid option And reverts to default config

2nd issue is I set mode.normal to "NORMAL" but the status line still show "NOR" '

The second issue should be solved in the latest version. Perhaps the first issue as well, can you try?

No, wait, sorry, I believe #74 fixes your second issue, but that hasn't been merged yet.

The 2nd issue wasn't a big deal.  More concerned with 1st one, no auto pairing.

I decided to try this on an arch system. the auto-pairs is working there with the same config file

hx --version
evil-helix (6ed8a342, helix 25.1)```

I think I have the same situation.

This works:

[editor]
auto-pairs = true

But this causes an issue:

[editor.auto-pairs]
'(' = ')'
'{' = '}'
'[' = ']'
'"' = '"'
'`' = '`'
'<' = '>'

I could also reproduce this with an isolated build of upstream Helix 25.01.1, so I guess this is an upstream bug, at least in the documentation.
